In the St. Paul neighborhood of Macalester Groveland, or Mac Groveland as it's commonly called, residents are just a few minutes' drive from downtown St. Paul, making the neighborhood a close, convenient alternative to downtown living. Mac Groveland homes for sale include residences for first-time buyers all the way up to multi-million dollar mansions. This community-oriented neighborhood is home to families, college professors, students, working professionals and retirees.
In part, the varied population is due to the rich educational environment of Mac Groveland. Both Macalester College and the University of St. Thomas – St. Paul campus are located in this St. Paul neighborhood, as well as the St. Paul Seminary. As part of St. Paul School District 14, Mac Groveland welcomes kids to Groveland Park Elementary, Randolph Heights Elementary and Ramsey Junior High. Mac Groveland also has many non-public schools, including the prestigious St. Paul Academy and the Summit School.
Mac Groveland is bordered by the historic, mansion-lined Summit Avenue to the north, and by Randolph Ave and Highland Park to the south. In addition to the Minnesota governor's mansion, you'll also find more houses of worship on Summit Avenue than any other single street in the country. Mac Groveland's western border is not a street, but rather the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, a public park with extensive walking and biking paths overlooking the majestic Mississippi River.
Grand Avenue runs east to west through the heart of the neighborhood and boasts a number of popular coffee shops, bakeries, ice cream shops and specialty boutiques. There are several other local businesses in the area as well as restaurants to suit every taste, including the St. Clair Broiler, Groveland Tap and Carmelo's. Mac Groveland residents (and those from surrounding St. Paul neighborhoods) descend upon Grand Avenue every June for Grand Old Day, which includes a parade and celebration as part of the largest one-day festival in the region.
Mac Groveland offers the best features of the suburbs within city limits, with spacious lawns and park space. Mattocks Park offers over three and a half acres of fun, including an ice rink and tennis courts, and is a favorite for young families. In addition, the neighborhood has two recreation centers operated by the City of St. Paul Parks and Recreation Department.
