Located on Minneapolis' south side, Powderhorn is just a few miles from downtown Minneapolis, bound by Lake Street on the north and 42nd Street East on the south. Its eastern boundary is Cedar Avenue South with Chicago Avenue forming the western border.

With most of the housing in Powderhorn built before 1920, the community has some of the oldest architecture in the Twin Cities area. The city lots mainly hold single-family homes, although Powderhorn homes for sale also include duplexes and apartments.

Neighborhoods in the Powderhorn community include Whittier, Lyndale, Central, Bryant, Powderhorn Park, Bancroft, Corcoran and Standish. The light-rail line runs through the Powderhorn community along Hiawatha Avenue, connecting downtown with the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and the Mall of America.

In addition to great restaurants and retail stores, Powderhorn has a diverse range of neighborhood businesses and is home to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the Children's Theatre Company.

The Powderhorn Art Fair is an annual collaboration between the Powderhorn Park Neighborhood Association and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. Held in the 66-acre Powderhorn Park, it features more than 180 exhibitors.

Powderhorn also holds an annual May Day parade, which is more of a play than a parade, put on by In the Heart of the Beat Puppet and Mask Theatre for more than 30 years.
