The Greater East Side community makes up St. Paul’s District 2. One of the city’s larger communities, Greater East Side is made up of seven smaller neighborhoods that are rich in diversity. The neighborhoods include Forest Lake, Hillcrest, Prosperity Heights, Hayden Heights, Beaver Lake, Hazel Park, and Phalen Village. Many of the neighborhoods were built in the 1950s and designed as bedroom communities with commuter homes for the people who worked at the nearby corporations of 3M, Whirlpool, and Hamm’s.
