Typically, high-traffic areas in the home tend to get the most love and attention. Kitchens and living rooms are constantly being invested in and renovated. However, it’s important to keep your bedroom up-to-date so it can be a restful and enjoyable space. After all, you do spend most nights there.

We have good news — it's possible to upgrade your master (or guest) bedroom for a lot less than you'd expect. Keep reading for a few helpful tips on making simple and inexpensive bedroom upgrades.

The $500 bedroom makeover

By saving a little chunk of change each month, you’ll be well on your way to a revamped bedroom. Here, we’ll discuss you how you can refresh your bedroom with $500, or even less.

Neutral, luxe bedding

First, focus on the bedding. Getting quality sheets, decorative throw pillows and a new comforter, quilt or duvet is necessary. Keep in mind, bedding with a neutral color or light pattern will pair nicely with a variety of statement pillows and art pieces. So, even if you swap out the print hanging in your bedroom mid-way through the year, the new art will still match your new duvet.

To keep costs down, try shopping at discount retailers like TJ Maxx or HomeGoods. These shops sell the same high-end department store sheets and duvets for much less, but may require a trip or two to find what you want. Because you aren’t paying full price for an all-in-one bedding set, you may have to search multiple times for a bedding scheme that fits perfectly together. Try to keep your new bedding budget to $200 or less.

Statement pieces

While gallery walls have been all the rage for the last few years, many decorators are now transitioning to oversized mirrors and pieces of art for a more minimalist feel. The bedroom is the perfect place to begin this change, as it makes perfect sense that you’d want that space to feel less cluttered.

With a $150 investment, look into statement pieces such as an oversized mirror, reading light sconces on each side of the bed, a new piece of art or a combination of all three. Then, pop these pieces around the bedroom to add a new element of design to the space. Pro tip: For inexpensive art, frame pretty wrapping paper!

Paint

Next, let’s talk about paint. If your walls are suffering from a few dings and scratches, or if you’re ready for a new wall color altogether, you might consider repainting. Be sure to set aside around $120 for simple touch-ups or to completely repaint your walls.

Or, if your walls seem to be in great condition and you’re happy with your original paint color, switch things up by repainting your bedroom set. If your furniture is an outdated wood stain or style, a new paint job can completely modernize the look.

Paint can be an expensive investment, so we recommend keeping the cost down by doing the job yourself, and by asking around to see if anyone has used painting tools — old rollers, tarp or drop cloth, paint brushes, tray and painter’s tape — that you can borrow. You could also encourage your bestie to remake their bedroom too and you can split the cost and both reap the benefits. If you need to purchase all of these items new, your DIY paint job could cost more like $200-300.

Little extras

Finally, spend $30 extra on accent pieces. Cute knick-knacks, yummy candles and classic picture frames can seriously enhance your space. Many second-hand stores have discounted new-to-you pieces--and some might even agree to sell what you already have! Alternatively, you can use this money toward updating the hardware on your bedroom furniture, if needed.

Have a little more to spend?

Have you started decorating and just can’t stop? If you still have a little more to spend, consider including the following upgrades in your bedroom makeover:

  • Replace your carpet or get a new, bright rug.
  • Install a modern ceiling fan.
  • Set up an essential oil station.
  • Purchase new window treatments.
  • Add shiplap, wainscotting or beadboard to one or more of your walls.

These final touches will have your bedroom looking brand new in no time. Keep your eyes peeled for great deals and complete any installation or furniture assembly yourself to save extra cash.
