Most of your cleaning supplies need to be cleaned regularly in order to keep them working at their highest efficiency and prolong the life of the device. In some cases, not cleaning your cleaning device or supplies results in spreading germs, dust and debris instead of removing them! Here’s how to clean some of your most frequently used cleaners.
Vacuums: Clean your vacuum every time you empty the canister or replace the bag.
- Empty the dustbin or bag and replace or wash the filter (check with the manufacturer for specific instructions).
- For the brush attachments and rolls, comb through and pull out any stuck hair and debris to ensure there’s nothing blocking the entrance, impeding mobility or reducing the suction of the vacuum.
- Finally, use a brush or cloth to wipe away dust, dirt and debris on all interior and exterior surfaces, including attachments.
Brooms: Give your brooms an extensive cleaning.
- Comb through the bristles to dislodge any trash, hair, dust, etc.
- Soak the bristles in a bucket of soapy water and allow it to sit 15-30 minutes. Be sure to swish the bristles around to get every area clean.
- Rinse and dry the bristles.
- Wipe the handle with a disinfectant.
- The dust pan can be cleaned the same way by soaking it in soapy water and allowing to dry.
Air purifiers: Some air purifiers have an alert system to let you know when it’s time for a cleaning, but if yours doesn’t, aim to clean it every 30 to 90 days.
- Unplug and use a vacuum attachment to clean the air intake grill.
- Remove interior parts and filters to wash, vacuum or replace—be sure to check with the manufacturer for instructions and be extremely gentle with the fine mesh.
- Wipe down the exterior and replace interior components. Note: if you washed your filter, make sure it’s completely dry before putting it back in the system.
Sponges and scrubbers: Because they are such heavy cleaning hitters, these should be rinsed and wrung out to dry after every use, with a deep clean every few days. But at the first sign of damage or odor, don’t even bother trying to clean them—it’s time to replace them.
- The easiest way to clean a sponge is in the microwave. Rinse the sponge and place it in a microwave-safe bowl filled with water, then microwave on high for 90 seconds.
- Once the sponge cools, wring it out and let air dry.
- For items with metal, place in the top rack of your dishwasher and run with detergent.
Washing machines and dryers: Generally, it’s recommended to clean your washing machine every month. As for dryers, look for signs like lint or dust accumulating behind the machine or needing to run the machine several times for clothes to get dry.
For washers:
- Some models have a cleaning cycle, but you can also use a specialty cleaner or fill the dispenser to the max with bleach. You can also clean it using normal detergent and hot running water. Never mix bleach with vinegar or ammonia. Ensure good ventilation and use proper protective gear when using strong cleaning agents.
- Run the washer again on rinse and spin without detergent.
- Wipe or wash the dispenser drawer and the rubber seal and drum. Make sure everything is dry by using a cloth or leaving the door open to air dry.
For dryers:
- Remove lint from lint trap and clean the mesh.
- Wipe down the interior with an all-purpose cleaner.
- Vacuum any dust and lint behind the machine near where air is taken in.
Toilet bowl brushes: Clean after every use and disinfect monthly.
- Rinse the brush under hot water.
- Disinfect the brush in bleach for thirty minutes (you can use your toilet bowl!).
- Rinse the brush again.
- Wipe the handle and brush holder with a disinfectant.
- Allow brush to air dry before putting away.
Dishwashers: Deep-clean the interior of your dishwasher monthly.
- Remove any bits of food or debris.
- Clean the dishwasher filter with hot, soapy water.
- Run a cleaning cycle with a specialty detergent or by placing one cup of distilled white vinegar in a dishwasher-safe bowl on the top rack and run on a heavy cycle.
- Wipe down the door and door gasket.
- Use a daily cleaner to wipe down the exterior.
