Three steps to a spring-ready home

 A spring-ready home

Key insights:

  • After spending the last few months cooped up indoors, it’s normal to become bored with your space.
  • A good spring cleaning and decluttering can help free up your interior and get it ready for a new beginning.
  • Swap out your decor and rearrange your furniture to make things feel fresh.
  • Bring in spring with some fresh air, crisp scents and energizing greens.

It’s been a long winter, and if you’ve been spending it at home, you’re probably ready for a reboot. Here are some quick, easy tips to switch up your space and get it ready for spring.

1. Start with spring cleaning

A deep clean and decluttering can make a world of difference. In addition to your usual sweeping, dusting and wiping, add in a few other tasks that you might have missed during the winter months.

  • Clean your furnace filter (it might even be time to adjust the temp!)
  • Deep clean appliances, including your dishwasher, fridge, humidifiers, etc.
  • Declutter high-traffic areas
  • Wash your washing machine and clean out your dryer lint trap

2. Make a few swaps

Refresh your space by swapping out items that you interact with or see every day. Different sheets, towels and throw blankets can make a huge visual difference in your space. Replacing heavier items with something lighter brings in the airiness of spring without much effort, even if you aren’t replacing the items with anything decidedly “springy,” like pastels and florals.

Here are a few more ideas to swap:

  • Curtains and drapes
  • Shower curtains
  • Throw pillows and blankets
  • Pictures in frames
  • Books and small décor items on display

If you don’t have doubles in your home that allow you to make seasonal swaps, consider simply moving the items. Putting decorative pillows in a different room, pairing different décor items together and rearranging furniture can make everything old feel new again.

3. Bring in spring

The final step in your quick refresh is to bring in all aspects of spring.

  • Open your windows and doors for 10-30 minutes a day to air out your home.
  • Use fresh flowers and greenery to decorate your space.
  • Replace wintery scents like cinnamon and clove with fresh citrus and herbs (think: cleaning supplies, candles and diffuser scents).
  • Keep curtains open to allow natural light to filter in.
  • Lighten up your space by using white, bright light bulbs.
